Nanotherapeutics: Drug Delivery Concepts in Nanoscience

An important and exciting aspect in the newly developing field of nanomedicine is the use of nanoparticle drug delivery systems allowing for innovative therapeutic approaches. Due to their small size, these drug delivery systems are promising tools in therapeutic approaches such as selective or targeted drug delivery towards a specific tissue or organ, enhanced drug transport across biological barriers, and intracellular drug delivery.
This timely book provides an overview of possible therapeutic applications. The first part of the book highlights general properties of and phenomena observed with nanoparticles, and the subsequent consequences for applications in drug delivery. The second part focuses on the therapeutic approaches that are possible through the use of nanoparticles, with each chapter discussing a specific disease (e.g. diabetes, cancer, inflammation, etc.) and the relevant therapeutic approaches based on the design of nanoparticulate drug delivery systems. Written in a concise manner, readers will gain an insight into the basics of nanoparticle preparation as well as a more detailed account of what is therapeutically feasible by using nanoparticle approaches.

Assessing Bioavailablility of Drug Delivery Systems: Mathematical Modeling

This book introduces mathematical modeling methods for calculating the profiles of plasma levels obtained with controlled release dosage forms and provides examples and case studies to illustrate the techniques employed. The mathematical models developed by the author are particularly powerful because they account for such major parameters as the kinetics of drug release controlled by diffusion or by erosion, and the kinetics of absorption into and elimination out of the plasma. They are also able to solve the problem of determining the drug level in plasma as a result of patient non-compliance, incorrect dosage, and incorrect frequency, and to determine the best dosage forms necessary for therapy.

Local Drug Delivery for Coronary Artery Disease: Established and Emerging Applications
Edoardo Camenzind, Ivan De Scheerder "Local Drug Delivery for Coronary Artery Disease: Established and Emerging Applications"Inf HealthCare 2005-06-14 ISBN: 1841840459 608 pages PDF 9 MB

Restenosis remains the Achilles heel of Percutaneous Coronary Interventions. Numerous pharmacological agents have been tested in order to reduce acute thrombosis and the hyperproliferative cellular response, and drug eluting stents-using the stent as a platform for local drug delivery-are now considered a significant breakthrough in interventional cardiology. Pioneers in the field, the editors of Local Drug Delivery for Coronary Artery Disease have assembled an excellent team of contributors who offer their experience with threatened vessel closure and restenosis, acute thrombosis, hyperproliferative cellular response, stents and local drug delivery. They share their expertise on all aspects of the field, including a discussion of results from preclinical and clinical studies, and they examine alternative methods of molecular delivery to the vessel wall. With coverage of the most current methods and applications, as well as a host of photographs illustrating their implementation, this book will serve as an excellent reference for cardiologists, pharmacologists, cardiac surgeons, and trainees.
